Breakfast before heading to Angkor Wat
We visited Angkor Wat, a temple complex and the largest religious monument in the world, with the site measuring 402 acres. It was originally constructed as a Hindu temple of god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple toward the end of the 12th centuy. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century.
Then, Angkor Thom, which was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII. It covers an area of 9 km², within which are located several monuments from earlier eras.
and 3 more sites as large but with lesser significance.
Angkor Thom was rediscovered from the jungle in 1802 by missionaries . The sites were overgrown by jungle and all these years later are still being restored, most with a very long way to go.
It is always intriguing to us how many difference cultures in the world in previous eras, all seemed to have similar architecture. These reminded us of the Mayan ruins.
It was 35 degrees and humid 😬 It didn't help that the dress code was that we must wear sleeves and pants below the knees ☹️
At this particular place you can stand and pretend you are touching noses with the king .
Do we look hot and wilted? We were !!
For a small donation you can have a spiritual meeting with a monk. At the end he ties a bracelet on your wrist
In one of the sites the temples had been overtaken by the jungle trees
At the end of the day we were very hot and tired. We had been site seeing for 6 hrs. We opted to stay at the hotel....went for a swim and had dinner by the pool
